Surveyors watch from the western bank shortly after sunrise, keeping below the reed line so the water remains undisturbed. A valid observation includes the direction of travel, the number of visible wake rings, and whether the animal carries shell fragments toward the bank. The pale coat can resemble reflected cloud, so entries require a second feature: the dark ear edge, the low rolling dive, or the paired prints left in white silt.

No bait, calls, or floating markers are used. Instead, a numbered stake well above the waterline identifies each viewing place. The Porcelainfen Otter Index combines these patient observations into a yearly route map, helping wardens keep boats away from resting pools during the first thaw. Uncertain sightings remain in the margin until another observer independently records the same route and behaviour.
